Charismatic Teaching

You may have been teaching or training for a while, very successfully. And yet … you’re aware that meeting objectives, achieving outcomes, and having satisfied learners and participants isn’t always enough. It’s not even enough, if you’re concerned about achieving excellence, to know that learning has taken place. These are the essential requirements for any session. How can make your teaching and training truly outstanding?

When you add an extra layer of charisma to your teaching or training, you make all your lectures, workshops and seminars memorable. Your attitude puts your learners in the right state for learning from the moment they arrive in the room, and both you and they remain in a peak learning state throughout the session – and recall and application of that learning remains in place. It can be applied back in the workplace or in people’s lives when they leave your workshop, seminar, or course.

Some people, and some teachers, do seem to have natural charisma. Some even believe that charisma is a natural talent that we either have or not. Yet there are some tools and techniques that it’s possible to learn and apply to add a little – or a lot – of charisma to our teaching and training. The way we stand, the way we speak, the words we use, our attitude and ‘mood’ or state, all make a massive difference and can lift an ordinary session to the level of an extraordinary charismatic session.

Please note this isn’t about creating a method of teaching and training that puts style above substance – it is possible to engage learners with your attitude and charisma and enhance their learning – actually, I argue that charismatic teaching is a major boost to learning.

What needs to be done?
As I wrote above, there are some changes you can make right away to become more charismatic. What qualifies me to offer this service?
With over 20 years of experience of teaching and training, including being responsible for teacher education in further and higher eduction, I know what it takes to be an excellent teacher. I’ve observed and given detailed constructive feedback on lessons, workshops and seminars about topics ranging right across the board.

More than that, I’ve enhanced my approach to teaching and training by studying neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and specialised techniques that lead to having advanced training skills. I’m not suggesting the need to make a detailed study of NLP or even accept all of the elements of NLP that can lead to personal change. But there are some processes that I’ve found make a major difference to my effectiveness, and I’m convinced will make a big difference to you too.
